Indications: 
  • Adjunctive treatment for BPD
Administration: 
  • Metered-dose inhaler, use with aerochamber
Dosage: 
  • 1 - 2 puffs (125 - 250 mcg) BID
Side Effects: 
  • GI: dry mouth, oral candidiasis
  • Respiratory: bronchospasm, cough, hoarseness

As fluticasone has an extremely low oral bioavailability (<1%), systemic effects are minimal

Notes: 
  • If salbutamol or ipratropium is also ordered, give salbutamol or ipratropium first, wait 5 minutes and then administer fluticasone
  • After each administration, rinse mouth
