Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)

Indications: 
  • Treatment of pyridoxine-dependent seizures
  • Prevention of drug-induced vitamin B6 deficiency (eg. Isoniazid)
Administration: 
  • IV direct / IV intermittent infusion: do not exceed 50 mg/minute
  • PO
Dosage: 

Pyridoxine-dependent seizures

  • Initial: IV/PO (IV preferred) 50 -100 mg
  • Maintenance: IV/PO (oral preferred) 50 - 100 mg/day

 

Prevention of drug-induced vitamin B6 deficiency

  • PO: 1 - 2 mg/kg/day once a day

 

Side Effects: 
  • Rarely
Parameters to Monitor: 
  • When given for Pyridoxine-dependent seizures, monitor EEG concurrently
Compatibility: 

- Solutions Compatible: D5W, 0.9% NaCl
