  • Treatment/prevention of hyponatremia
Administration: 
  • IV continuous infusion
  • PO
Dosage: 
  • Treatment:
    • Deficit= serum deficit (mmol/L) x Wt (kg) x 0.6
    • Replace over 24 - 48 hours IV/PO
  • Maintenance: 1 - 4 mmol/kg/day IV/PO

 * Requirements may be higher with very low birth weight infants

Side Effects: 
  • CVS: edema, hypervolemia
  • Endocrine and metabolic: hypernatremia
