Indications: 
  • Hyperkalemia
Administration: 
  • PO
  • PR: Mix 1 g with 2 - 3 mL of water to make a thick suspension (not a paste). Enema should be retained for 30-60 minutes
Dosage: 
  • 1 g/kg/dose
    • 1 gram of resin exchanges 1 mmol K
Side Effects: 
  • Endocrine and metabolic: hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, hypernatremia
  • GI: nausea, vomiting, constipation
Parameters to Monitor: 
  • Serum electrolytes

Compatibility: 
  • Compatible with: sorbitol, water, D5W
Notes: 
  • Each gram of resin contains 4.1 mmol of Na
