Indications: 
  • Sedative/hypnotic prior to nonpainful therapeutic or diagnostic procedures (eg. EEG, CT scan, MRI, ophthalmic exam)
Administration: 
  • PO: dilute dose with water or give with feeding to reduce GI irritation
  • PR: administer oral formulation rectally as per protocol
Dosage: 
  • Sedation pre-procedure: 25 - 50 mg/kg/dose PO/PR 30 - 60 minutes prior to procedure; may repeat a dose of 25 mg/kg 30 minutes after initial dose if needed
Side Effects: 
  • CNS: sedation, excitement (paradoxical)
  • Dermatologic: rash, urticaria
  • GI: gastric irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Hematologic: leucopenia, eosinophelia
  • Respiratory: respiratory depression if combined with other sedatives or narcotics

  • Vital signs and O2 saturation with doses used for sedation prior to procedure
